There are many great tools and resources for writers and sharing them can help others. Over the years, I’ve tried and tested many different tools and services. Below are the ones I still use and love because they make my writing life better and easier.

Some recommendations below contain affiliate links, so I receive a small commission if you sign up. I would, however, never recommend a service solely to earn a referral fee, nor would I recommend a service or a tool I haven’t used and liked myself.

Reedsy is an excellent resource for writers, regardless of experience. It offers a wide range of writing tips, know-how and workshops. I’ve used it to find a copy-editor, because Reedsy vets their editors, and loved it. I would also recommend Reedsy Discovery review services: I’ve used them for all of my books.

Scrivener is a fantastic writing software that makes writing and formatting much easier. I love how easy it is to change your story’s structure, create character templates and keep all the research notes in one place. And their Fullscreen composition mode is a godsent for writers with ADHD. I cannot recommend this tool enough.

Publisher Rocket is a power tool that helps indie authors pick the right keywords and categories for their novels. It also provides valuable insights about their niche and genre.

Alliance of Independent Authors is an amazing community and a knowledge hub that equips indie authors with essential tools and writing resources. It also helps us stay on top and ahead of the publishing industry and navigate through legal and other issues. I’ve been a proud member of ALLI since 2021.

Autocrit is an author platform with many excellent writing and revision tools. Among my favourites are genre comparisons and tools to identify weak writing. Autocrit’s story analyser helps you vet your story ideas and its Backwards Blueprint will reverse engineer an outline for your novel. All in all, Autocrit is my go-to tool to improve my writing and my favourite revising tool.

ProWriting Aid is a great AI-powered tool that helps writers refine their prose, improve their grammar and better understand their writing tics and mistakes.

The Write It Scared Podcast, hosted by fellow book coach Stacy Frazer, is a fantastic resource for writers at any stage. It normalises writing challenges and struggles and provides the tools, know-how and encouragement we all need to keep going.

The Exophonic Writer Podcast by Zoe Gomez is a wonderful resource for anyone writing in a non-native language, so be sure to give it a listen.

Shit No One Tells You About Writing is a brilliant source of information for anyone pursuing the traditional publishing path.  Bestselling author Bianca Marais and two agents, Carly Watters and Cecilia Lyra, unpick the publishing industry and offer valuable insights into what matters most.

My list of books for writers – some of my favourite books on the craft, including Lisa Cron’s Wired for Stories, Jennie Nash’s Blueprint for a Book and Jane Friedman’s The Business of Being a Writer.
