The Opening Pages Review

Description:

The opening pages can make the difference between someone reading your book or not. Even more so if that someone is an agent you’d like to land. The opening pages of a novel have to do a lot of heavy lifting: they need to introduce the lead character, state the story promise and get the reader interested in finding out more. If you’d like to submit your opening pages with confidence or make sure they captivate the reader, then this package is for you;

You get an in-depth analysis of the first fifty (50) pages of your novel (standard manuscript formatting) with clear, actionable steps to move on and a summary of your story’s potential weak points. You will receive:

  • Personalised in-line feedback in the manuscript
  • A detailed editorial letter (3 – 5 pages), highlighting your work’s biggest strengths and challenges with clear and actionable next steps
  • A 45-minute coaching call on Zoom to discuss the feedback
  • Additional resources and exercises (when applicable) to improve your story and characters
  • A partner who will encourage, support and challenge you to take your writing to the next level

How it works

I perform a thorough analysis of the first fifty (50) pages of your novel (standard manuscript format), highlight its biggest strengths and address potential structural issues, weaknesses and parts that lack clarity. I look at the story and the characters, making sure that your opening pages do the heavy lifting needed to keep the reader engaged and give them enough detail to want to keep reading.

I sum up my findings and recommendations in an editorial letter (usually 3 to 5 pages) and provide actionable steps to help you move forward with the project. After you receive the editorial letter, we’ll schedule a 45-min Zoom call to discuss my feedback, your next steps and address any questions or concerns.

Who it's for:

You’ll get the most value out of this service if your novel is complete and polished. If you want to self-publish or pitch to an agent or publisher, a developmental edit of opening pages can make the difference between someone buying your novel or taking you on as a client, or not.

Who it's not for:

If your novel is still in the first draft, then this package isn’t a good fit, because your opening pages will probably change once you revise the story. For tips to revise, check out my blog posts on the topic.
